Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, November 7, so don't forget to set your clocks back one hour! When the clock should strike 2:00 A.M. on November 7, the time will fall back to 1:00 A.M. EST. Make sure you've got the correct time so you don't miss any assignment deadlines!
Instructors, are you using Poll Everywhere for live web-based polling in your classroom? We're happy to share that Poll Everywhere results can now be imported into the Sakai Gradebook as participation grades! You are no longer limited to graded multiple-choice or clickable image questions but can apply participation credit on ALL Poll Everywhere questions! See our EdTech Blog
for more details.
Please be aware of an upcoming required update on Zoom functionality. Beginning November 1, everyone will be required to update their Zoom software to ensure it is no more than nine months behind the current version at any given time. From that point on, users must update their software if their version falls behind this nine-month window. Users will be prompted to update the Zoom meeting client to the latest version before they can sign in or join a meeting/webinar if they fall behind the 9-month window but will be provided the option to join a meeting through the web client instead.
To prevent disruption of scheduled meetings, we recommend all users check their current Zoom version and upgrade their Zoom client
if needed. Beginning October 22 at 6am, you will receive a prompt to update your Zoom client if you do not have version 5.5.0 or later installed. Please see this Zoom notice

University Research Week is an annual celebration of Carolina's research excellence and an effort to increase participation by students, of all levels, in research activity. The 2021 theme is “Research Perseveres,” highlighting the impressive achievements and successes our researchers and students have made throughout a time of adversity and challenges. One of the week’s signature events will be a virtual series of presentations from interdisciplinary teams of UNC researchers who have come together to solve major societal issues. Additionally, many schools and departments will be hosting lectures and symposiums, the Office of Undergraduate Research will be hosting workshops on how to engage in research, and research award winners will be recognized at every career stage.
Student populations are experiencing high rates of mental health-related concerns while faculty and staff also express concerns broadly related to their mental health. With recognizing the importance of mental health, the need for cultural changes to improve mental health across campus, and the potential for a breadth of strategies outside of clinical care, the UNC-CH Peer Support Core was developed.
Please visit the Peer Support Core whose mission is to promote high quality, diverse, broadly available peer support for students, staff, and faculty that provides a social base for individual, group, and institutional coping with challenges; provides a base especially for coping with COVID-19 and UNC-CH’s reckoning with and response to racism and inequity; contributes to overall goals of Carolina Next.
Instructors are also encouraged to use these teaching strategies to promote mental health and well-being in crisis , put together by the Center for Faculty Excellence.

Going home for the holidays? Set up ConnectCarolina access for your parents!
Did you know that, as a student, you can give another person access to ConnectCarolina to pay your bills, see your class schedule...or both? Here are two great reasons to set your parents up with ConnectCarolina access:
Sharing your Onyen and password (yes, even with your parents!) violates security best practices and can make it more difficult to troubleshoot should your account become compromised. Setting up an appropriate access account for those who need it is a great way to provide the access they need while keeping your account secure.
What's more, as 2-Step Verification is added to campus resources it will become impossible for others (like your parents) to use your credentials without also having access to your mobile device.
Easy-to-follow instructions for setting up access can be found here: go.unc.edu/CCProxyInstructions

Do you need proofreading strategies? Try these or make an appointment with the Writing Center for more writing tips!
Read your paper out loud
You can often hear things you did not see--typos, grammar issues, very long sentences, gaps in your argument, etc.
Text-to-speech programs can read to you
Look for one thing at a time
Look only at punctuation, then typos, etc.
Read one sentence at a time
Start at the end of your paper and move back--you will better focus on each sentence instead of getting caught up in your argument

When UNC users are added with an email address, a separate Sakai account is created for them and they cannot access your Sakai site through their Onyen account.
NOTE: If you manually add TAs, you are taking responsibility for them handling student record information according to FERPA. See Teaching Assistants Access and Permission for more information.
Tired of waiting in line to print from a CCI Printer? Check out the CCI Printer Map for over 50 printers on campus.
When creating a course site, be sure to select only one roster if you want separate course sites. The course creation process creates one site at a time, so if you select multiple rosters, all the checked rosters will be attached to the course site you are creating.

Instructors, are you not seeing the “New” option in Worksite Setup to create your new course site? Contact your departmental course scheduling officer to list you as an Instructor with the University Registrar.
