Wu Style

Wu-style Taijiquan

Wu Yu-Hsing (1812-1880), a Yongnian resident in Hebei, learned the ABC's of Taiji from fellow provincial Yang Luchan. In 1852, Wu Yu-Hsing went to work for his brother at Wuyang. On his way to Wuyang, he learned the new routine of Taijiquan from Chen Qingping and mastered it. At his brother's home, Wu Yu-Hsing found a transcript of Wang Zongyue's On Taiji Quan. Wu eventually wrote The Theories of Thirteen Postures, which has become one of the classics of Taiji writing.

The Wu Yu-Hsing style of Taiji features compactness, slow movement, strict footwork and distinguishes between substantialness and insubstantialness. We will study a version of the Wu style for this course.
