[Location: a university conference room]
[Three members of a university search committee, Fred, Jane, and Mary, sit at a conference table.]
Fred: How long will it take to hire someone?
[A fourth member of the committee, John, enters quietly and sits down.]
Mary: Too long! I heard from someone on another search committee that it can take months, between advertising and interviewing, and then there's all that paperwork to do!
John: You know, I don't think this needs to take very long at all. You know Bill, who works down the hall? He's got a friend that's really qualified for the position, and I think that she'd be easy to work with. Why don't we just talk with her, and then we can skip the advertising and interviewing altogether.
Jane: I don't think we can skip the interviewing. But how about if I do it by phone, and then I can get back with you guys on how it went.
John: Sounds like a plan to me. But how can we get rid of all this paperwork?
Mary: Well, if we can't eliminate it, let's just get it done fast!
John: Yeah, I agree.
[All nod.]
