Response to Illustration 2: "Taking the Candidate to Dinner"

Before candidates come to campus, or at the beginnings of their visits, offer them a newcomer information packet (with area information including housing, schools, community organizations, benefits, etc.). You may also refer the candidates to websites about area schools and University benefits and/or refer them to a human resources representative.

Remember, questions that you ask candidates, even during a dinner, should be related to job duties. Avoid questions such as: "How will you manage childcare?" and "Are you planning on having more children?" Be sure that your decisions about hiring candidates are based only on job qualifications and not personal information.
