Volunteer Description

The Spanish-School Reading Partners program of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools pairs bilingual volunteers one-on-one with beginning readers whose first language is Spanish to help them learn to read and write in English. Each volunteer works with two students individually during a one-hour session twice a week. Volunteers must be able to speak both Spanish and English well. Volunteers will be matched with students at times that are convenient for both the volunteer and the students. A one-time required training session teaches volunteers how to reinforce emergent reading skills by engaging students in simple interactions such as reading, playing word games and writing in Spanish and English.
