May 15, 2024: Sakai in Restricted Access
On May 15, 2024, Sakai entered a restricted access state. All Sakai sites were permanently unpublished and access restricted to site owners, except for temporary access granted to students with Incomplete grades. Canvas is now the only centrally-supported active Learning Management System. Site owners have two years to extract any wanted content as Sakai will be decommissioned and completely inaccessible on May 15, 2026.
During restricted access:
- All courses, projects, and University-related work must be conducted outside of Sakai. No new sites created.
- All Sakai sites permanently unpublished. Student, Participant, Auditor, Guest roles do not have access to sites.
- Instructor, Organizer, Teaching Assistant, Coordinator, Tech Support roles still have access to their sites to allow for content review and retrieval for 2 years until Sakai is decommissioned on May 15, 2026.
- Tools hidden from student view will not be visible to site owners. Submit a help request with any questions or issues.
- All email functions disabled.
- Password resets for Sakai non-Onyen Guest accounts not permitted due to disabled email functions.
- Incomplete grades: Instructors who have students with IN and AB grades must submit a help request to give their students temporary access to the course to complete their work. All communication between instructor and student must occur outside of Sakai (e.g., University email).

- HIPAA : Protected Health Information (PHI) in Sakai is not permitted.
- FERPA : Sakai Assignments, Drop Box, Gradebook, PostEm, and Tests & Quizzes are designed to share FERPA-protected information privately between instructors and individual students.
- Honor Code : Students must adhere to the Honor Code at all times. Consult your instructor or the Office of Student Conduct if you have questions.
Canvas Transition Timeline
- Spring 2024: Last term for Sakai use.
- May 15, 2024: Sakai entered restricted access. All courses and projects must be in Canvas.
- May 15, 2026: Sakai decommissioned and no longer available.

Course Migrations Available
- Course content has been migrated from Sakai to Canvas for all 2022, 2023, and SP24 registrar courses.
- Look for "SAKAI_Archive" sites in Canvas to copy into official course sites.

Sakai Maintenance
Regular maintenance of the Sakai system will occur on the third Thursday of each month and as needed. Notices will be posted within Sakai.
